X-FAST User Facility
XUV Femtosecond Absorption Spectroscopy Tabletop (X-FAST)
Built for high throughput and operational simplicity, the X-Fast facility makes ultrafast core-level spectroscopy accessible to chemists and materials scientists without specialized ultrafast-laser expertise.
X-FAST is a tabletop instrument at University of Wisconsin–Madison for ultrafast transient-absorption spectroscopy in the extreme ultraviolet range. It produces femtosecond XUV probe pulses by high-harmonic generation (HHG) over a continuous 40–72 eV window, paired with a synchronized 800 nm (or 400 nm) optical pump. Because this window spans the M-edges of 3d transition metals and O/N edges of heavier elements, a single measurement can follow electronic and structural dynamics at multiple elemental sites simultaneously.
