The University of Wisconsin - Madison College of Engineering, in cooperation with the Graduate School, directs a research program for undergraduates from June to August. The objective of this program is to provide targeted student populations with opportunities to test their interest in science and engineering careers. Participating students conduct their own eight-week research project under the direction of the College of Engineering faculty members and work as members of laboratory research teams investigating problems in engineering and physical sciences in a well recognized academic environment.
Each participant receives a stipend for the eight-week period of full-time research. Travel expenses are covered by the program. Housing and a modest meal allowance is provided for students in University dormitories. Undergraduate students majoring in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physical Science, Engineering or Computer Science areas, who have preferably completed their sophomore or junior years, and are U. S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled in an accredited college or university are eligible to apply.
The applicant should have a strong interest in a career in engineering or physical science research and a strong desire to complete a Ph.D. Disabled students, minority students, and students from small liberal arts institutions where comparable research facilities are unavailable are particularly encouraged to apply. Upon submission of a complete application, criteria for selection will be based on academic qualifications as determined by academic record and prior course work, letters of recommendation from college science teachers or advisors, and the statement regarding career interests and reasons for applying to this program.
